Exploring Time: Illusion, Relativity, and Quantum Gravity

                                    Time is an Illusion

Matter is the concentrated form of energy. Photons are converted into matter by a process called Pair Production, in which a photon entering in a strong magnetic field results in the formation of a particle and its anti particle. The energy of photon must be greater or equal to rest mass of the pair . For instance in production of electron and positron the energy must be 1.022 MeV or greater. So in some sense matter can be considered as a stationery form of energy(light). The major difference between matter and light is that matter experiences Time.

Time as a Fourth Dimension

According to Einstein's Theory of Relativity, Time is the fourth dimension. This is called Spacetime. Space and time are perpendicular to each other and we as a matter passes through it. The faster we travel through space the slower we travel through time. This is called Time Dilation. As speed of light is the speed limit of the universe so at that speed we'll not pass through time, hence time stops for us. Time also slows down near massive object in space. The reason behind that is the massive objects curve the space fabric causing light to bend and take more time to travel through it. This relative reduction in speed of light cause time to slow down. Through this concept it is extracted that Time is effected by the relative speed of matter and light.

Time as an Illusion

Although matter is produced by light but light doesn't experience time then how do we say that time does exist? Different theories under these perception are:

  • Julian Barbour’s Theory of Time suggests that time is not a fundamental entity, in fact it is an illusion created by succession "nows" or instantaneous snapshots of the universe. According to Barbour the flow of time is only an illusion of perception due to change in the snapshots.
  • According to Block Universe Theory of Time the past, present and future exist simultaneously and passage of time is just our mind's vision. All events are fixed and exist simultaneously. This concept limits the perception of Free Will but somehow it describes nature of time.

  • Some approaches to Quantum Gravity propose that time may be an emergent property rather than a fundamental aspect of the universe.

Human mind is the most complex object in the known universe, it creates visions, which we believe as a fact. Several things around us are just our brain created things, for example the colors around us doesn't have a real existence. They are just different wavelengths of light. Brain creates these illusions just to simplify our understanding about something.

illusion in brain

Life is the biggest factor which creates a strong perception about time. Our body has DNA which mutates and cause cell damage, eventually results in aging. This aging doesn't depend on time because if this is a time depending thing then life would be fixed for everyone. The DNA mutation is confirmed because it has already been programmed in our genes. The main reason of aging is the energy changes outside or inside the body. Our body is just like a vehicle to survive in this three dimensional world. The death is actually the decomposition of the body while consciousness remain conserved. Eventually, everything is Light and it is the only reason to stimulate life, death and other events within them. All these complexities are simply termed as Time by our brain.

Conclusion

In conclusion, theories in philosophy and science argue that our sense of time as a continuous flow may be an illusion, challenging our understanding of reality. Theories such as quantum gravity and time dilation suggest that time may not be fundamental but rather emergent or relative. Philosophical viewpoints that contend that time is a creation of human consciousness that consists of static moments or exists simultaneously throughout past, present, and future include those of Julian Barbour and the Block Universe theory. These concepts force us to reconsider how we view age, time, and existence, which promotes a deeper investigation of the secrets of the cosmos and our place in it.
